PROFESSIONAL
BACKGROUND
Prior to joining
Fraxedas Mediation Firm, Professor Peters spent 39 years teaching law
students and lawyers about negotiation
and mediation at the Levin
College of Law at the University of Florida, and the University of
Colorado Law School. He co-founded the Institute for Dispute Resolution
at the Levin College of Law in 1986, and directed this organization for
10 years. He co-founded, directed, and taught in the Virgil Hawkins
County Mediation Clinic at Florida for ten years. Mr. Peters has taught
dispute resolution skills as a visiting professor at the University of
Alabama, Elon University, and the University of Iowa, and worked in
dispute resolution institutes at Hamline University, the University of
Nevada at Las Vegas, and Pepperdine University. In addition to numerous
presentations and workshops in the United States, he has taught
negotiation and mediation theories and skills to lawyers, judges, and
law students in Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, Haiti, India,
Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Poland, Taiwan, South Africa, and
Uganda. Awarded a Trustee Research Fellow designation in 1999, he has
co-authored two books and published fifteen articles analyzing aspects
of dispute resolution theories and practices. He also helped develop
dispute resolution curriculums as a Senior Fulbright Scholar with the
University of Malaya in Kuala Lupur, Malaysia; as a Fulbright Senior
Specialist at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan; and as a visiting
professor at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Before starting
his teaching career, Mr. Peters practiced as a Reginald Heber Smith
Community Lawyer with the Greater Miami Legal Services, Inc., where he
specialized in family practice and appellate litigation.
